Preheat oven (conventional 175°C / convection 155°C). Lightly grease a donut pan and dust with a little flour.
Combine together the sour cream, butter, egg, and sugars, and whisk until very smooth.
Whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt and stir it into the wet ingredients. If the dough appears to be very thick stir in 1-2 tablespoons of buttermilk. Fill each donut cavity ¾ of the way full, and using the back of a wet spoon evenly spread the batter.
Bake the donuts for 15 minutes or until they are golden brown. Remove the donuts from the oven, leave to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, and then carefully remove them from the pan and leave to cool full on a wire rack.
For the glaze:
Sieve the powdered sugar and whisk it into the whipping cream until smooth. Divide the glaze into a few different bowls, and colour the glazes with the food dye (try to make colours you would find on a cat!). Dye a small amount of glaze black for the eyes and noses.
Create two small slits on each of the donuts and place an almond into each slit to create the ears.
Drizzle the glaze onto the donuts, creating spots, stripes and patterns to look like cat fur. Use a toothpick to draw a face on each donut using the black glaze.
Leave the glaze to harden for at least 20 minutes before eating
